7 years of experience... but !!

Alsalam alikom wa ra7mat Allah wa barakatoh

For the first time -as far as I remember- I start writing the post before defining its title...

I'll tell you a story happened with me a couple of days ago. I've got the chance to attend an interview process (among the guys who were interviewing someone for a Team Lead position). This 2 hours were so important in my life and I guess they will be of a good value for that person too.

The interview process was as follows, our HR makes a phone interview with the candidate, then a physical HR interview, then a technical interview that ends by a task. If the candidate failed in any of the interview phases, he will be thanked and let free :D.

The guy applied for a position of C++ Developer position but after the phone interview, our HR suggested that due to his long experience (7 years), he may fit to a TL position...

I arrived at 10:00am which is the time the technical interview should start. We began the interview by asking general questions to know his areas of experience. As he claimed, he worked in C++ for about 3-4 years, .NET for 2 years and Java for last year. As we moved on into the interview process, we realized he is not professional in any of them, I can't even give him a 'B' in any of those areas.

He also did his Masters study in Computer Science and I felt he considered it a bad choice cuz he spoke about his friends who got MBA and considers that they got a big career shift because of that.

Anyway, we now moved into coding phase, he is given a paper and pen and asked to implement a basic functionality... I really consider him failed in that test...

Anyway, I'm telling you all that cause I thought "this guy spent 7 years of his life and what did he end up with ? not much" I know a lot of fresh graduate who can astonish us in such an interview...

I wanted to document this story so that me as well as all fresh graduates take care about their choices, I believe that the first 10 years of your career are the most crucial years, the most productive years... make good use of them!!

Good luck everybody...

  4. AA,
Thank you bgd for the advice, It's really a big moral that all students need to know.
Maybe the problem of the one you are talking about is in loving his career, In believing it is rewarding
May GOD help us all not to be in his place ever.
    Best of luck

Windows7 adds Math Input Panel

Alsalam alikom wa ra7mat Allah wa barakatoh… I was reading a windows team post about Input Panels improvements in Windows7 [ here ]. When at the end I saw a very interesting –intuitive if you wish- new thing… which is, as you guessed, the Math Input Panel… Yes, that crappy font is mine… I “drew” that by mouse as I don’t have a tablet pen/pc. You can then paste it directly into word and it’ll recognize it as an editable equation… During my tests, the output panel (the top part) hanged, but I liked that the drawing panel was still responsive and I could still write/erase… till the top one started to respond again… One other thing to know, after you click Insert (that button down there) it copies the equation in MathML [ Wikipedia link ] format.. which is a standard way of representing equations and hence any application that recognizes the format can insert it not as an image but as a nice editable equation… If you think it recognized something wrong, you can click “Sele

Visual Studio 2008 Not saving changes or project properties?

Alsalam alikom wa ra7mat Allah wa barakatoh (Peace upon you) I’ve recently ran into problems with VS 2008. Summarized here: When you try to edit the project properties (specially C++ projects) you are faced with a little nice message saying “Exception from HRESULT: 0xF9F0F308”. Sometimes when you are editing a file (specially large ones), VS doesn’t recognize you’ve made changes (ie doesn’t display that ‘*’ in the files tabs) hence, when you save, nothing actually gets saved. For those 2 problems, a friend explained the problem and a work around (till they officially release a fix)… Open up a Visual Studio 2008 Command Prompt Run cd "C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Visual Studio 9.0\Common7\IDE" Make a backup copy of devenv.exe in case something does not work right. ie. copy devenv.exe devenv.exe.bak Run editbin /largeaddressaware:no devenv.exe Happy VSing… :)
